The Power of Colossus

by fathullah

Search Engine Colossus: International Directory of Search Engines can be looked upon as an effort to give the internet "structure". This WWW roadmap allows surfers to efficiently gain access to the far reaches of the net!

It is hoped that visitors will have an informative, fascinating internet surfing experience as they gain better understanding of their fellow world citizens.

Search Engine Colossus first went online in April, 1998 and it now (August, 2008) has about 3550 listings from 310 countries and territories around the world!

Note: For a "territory" to be listed, it must have an autonomous government, or officially be declared a "nation or republic". Unrecognized countries are also listed. The point is to open up communication with other societies, not to erect barriers. The world is much more complicated a place than your basic 20th Century "Nation State" world view presented in atlases, the United Nations, or the "March in of the Athletes" at the Olympic Games.

Search Engine Colossus originates from Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada.

Beaucoup! - A Web Directory

by Muhammad Ridzuan Mohd Noor Zaidi

Let's know about Beaucoup!. This subject-specific search engine that contains web directories is started in the winter of 1995-96 as a small page residing on the back end of my personal website. Beaucoup has more than 1,000 listings of search engines, directories and indices across the world, grouped in some 20 categories. It can be viewed in English, Dutch, Spanish, German, Japanese and French. Beaucoup actually is one person who is also known as Webmaster or Teri. He is chief cook, bottle washer, complaint desk, researcher, html less-than-a-guru, accountant, ad exec, and anything else that goes into the site. In fact, it is used to be classified as a directory for some reasons.

Talking about privacy policy, Beaucoup doesn't even collect cookies, though a a couple of its advertisers do. While a great deal of email is received on Beaucoup, even email addresses are considered personal and are not nor will they ever be disclosed to anyone unless for legal purposes beyond the Webmaster's control. In addition, Beaucoup is different because the engines listed on the main site (all but the category "Shopping",they offer up a *lot* of information, not simply lists of commercial products or services). They must also be searchable in that they have either an input engine or an alpha-numeric listing -- anything which allows the user to zero in on pages pertaining to the topic they're researching. Any site which exists out of these parameters is either a mistake (or extremely exceptional.
